Description
Late afternoon sunlight causes the altiplano grasslands to glow golden and lights up Mt Chacaltaya (centre, 5395m / 17,700ft) and surrounding peaks. Chacaltaya is best known for having the worlds highest ski lift and its closeness to Bolivia's capital La Paz made it a popular skiing trip. It is also a high profile and well studied casualty of climate change - its glacier started receding dramatically after around 1980 and had all but disappeared by 2009. Any snow cover on the mountain is now the result of snowfalls rather than a permanent icefield.
