Description
The granite towers of Patagonia are awe inspiring! Mt Fitz Roy (3405m / 11,170ft) is also called El Chaltén, from the native Tehuelche word meaning "smoking mountain" after the cloud that often rises from its summit. At sunrise the granite walls often glow an orange colour, giving the impression the mountains are on fire. This image was the result of a pre dawn climb up a hill near El Chalten (the nearby village from which has the same name andteh mountain) which, weather permitting, has wonderful panoramas of the region's famous peaks. The peak is one of the highlights of the Los Glaciares National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
