Description
The sheer granite walls of Mt Fitz Roy (3405m / 11,170ft) are one of the most famous and spectacular sights in the Argentine Patagonia and are part of the Los Glaciares National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. This view looks along the rushing glacial waters of the upper part of the Rio Blanco river. The peak is named after Robert FitzRoy, the English naval office who was captain of the HMS Beagle on its famous 2nd voyage. The peak's local name is El Chaltén, from the native Tehuelche word meaning "smoking mountain" after the cloud that often rises from its summit. The nearby village from which nearly all tourists use as a base for visiting the area has the same name.
