Description
A close up in black and white of the summit of Mt Illampu (6368m / 20,890ft), the 4th highest in Bolivia and the northernmost major peak of the Cordillera Real range. There are several myths and legends about the peak, whihc is believed to be the dwelling place of many Andean gods. It is one of the hardest climbs in Bolivia; even its normal route is a tough and serious challenge. It was first climbed in June 1928 by a German / Austrian team via the SW ridge, on the right of this image. The light is highlighting the impressive ice formations and flutings of the mountain's west face.
