Description
The approx 36 hour old waxing crescent / new moon setting above the crater of Parinacota volcano at sunset. The volcano lies on the Bolivia - Chile border and is, at 6330m / 20,765ft high, the highest symmetrical cone volcano in the world. This single shot was taken from approx 10km away on the Bolivia side of the border with a telephoto lens.
The glow lighting up most of the moon's surface is earthshine, reflected earthlight (sunlight reflected by the Earth) lighting up the Moon's night side. It is also known as the Moon's ashen glow or "the new Moon with the old Moon in her arm". The small wisps of cloud drifting around the crater rim were fascinating to watch.
