Description
A panoramic shot made of 7 vertical images stitched together of the arch of the Milky Way above giant cacti on Incahuasi Island in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni in south west Bolivia. The green and orange colours in the sky above the horizon are airglow or nightglow, caused by various processes in the upper atmosphere (including cosmic radiation, ionization of atoms by the sun's radiation and others). The green colour was particularly vivid on a couple of nights on this trip! The cacti have been lit by some light painting with an LED panel.
On the far left of the image you can see the Magellanic Clouds, irregular dwarf galaxies that orbit the Milky Way that can be seen in the southern hemisphere. The lower one is the Large Magellanic Cloud or LMC, above it is the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The glow above the horizon left of centre below the brightest part of the Milky Way is the Zodiacal Light, which is produced by sunlight reflecting off dust particles in the Solar System. It is visible along the ecliptic during the spring and autumn months before dawn or after sunset (which depends whether you are in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere). The mountain on the horizon below the right end of the Milky Way is the Tunupa volcano (5320m / 17,460ft) on the northern side of the Salar.

Love! This is incredible! Amazing colors and desert foreground!

Thank you Rachel, there were some pretty surreal airglow colours on that trip, easier to capture with totally dark skies
