Description
A panoramic image (made from 6 stitched vertical images) of lagoons near the shore of the Salar de Ascotan, a salt flat high in the Chilean Andes in the Alto Loa NationaL Reserve northeast of Calama. The main mountains are the Araral (5680m / 18,745ft, centre) and Ascotan ( 5478m / 18,077ft, R) volcanoes; in the left distance is the 5865m / 19,250ft high Ollague volcano (which is still active). Borax and other minerals are extracted from this and other salt flats and mineral lakes in the region.
