Description
The Inti Raymi festival in Cusco, Peru is a re-enactment of the Inca celebrations for the New Year / winter solstice (June 21st in the southern hemisphere), a very important date for the indigenous people of the Andes. The last festival (which honoured the sun god Inti, the most important Inca deity) with an Inca present took place in 1535, after that it was banned by the Spanish conquistadores and the Catholic church. The modern re-enactments started in 1944. Ceremonies take place in Cusco on June 24th at the Coricancha (formerly the Inca Sun Temple in the city centre), central Plaza de Armas square and the Inca site of Sacsayhuaman above the city and are a major tourist attraction. This image is of the parades between the Coricancha and the Plaza de Armas, and shows bearers carrying a golden conder. The Andean condor was considered sacred by the Incas (and many other Andean cultures); it was believed to be the ruler of the upper world and associated with the sun deity and mountain gods ("Apus") who lived among the Andean peaks.
