Description
This perfect conical volcano is the highest peak (6330m / 20,765ft) in Lauca National Park in the far north of Chile, it is also said to be the highest symmetrical conical volcano in the world. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. The lake, Lake Chungara, was formed by a lava dam during a major eruption around 8,000 years ago which radically altered the local river drainage systems. At 4,517m /14,820ft it is one of the highest lakes in South America.
