Description
An early morning view of the Payachatas ("twin" in the Aymara language) volcanos, which dominate the vast high altitude plains of the spectacular Lauca National Park in the far north of Chile. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. The peaks lie on the Bolivia border and are individually Parinacota (L, 6342m / 20,805ft) and Pomerape (6282m / 20,610ft). You can just make out Lake Chungara below the Parinacota volcano, which is the highest symmetrical cone volcano in the world.
