Description
Lima's main central square is called the Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor and is the focal point of the historic city centre. The Presidential Palace, Archbishop's Palace and City Hall are all found here. The city's first cathedral was built in 1535. Construction of the current building began in 1598 though it has been extensively modified since and had to be virtually rebuilt after a major earthquake destroyed much of the city in 1746. The current towers were added in the 1790s, the fountain dates from 1651.
