Description
Detail of the magnificent stone carvings on the tympanum and archivolts of the Puerta del Perdon / Portal of Forgiveness, the main entrance to Toledo cathedral. The Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo (Catedral Primada Santa María de Toledo, its full name) is one of the finest gothic style cathedrals in Spain and is modeled after Bourges cathedral. Building began in 1226 under the rule of Ferdinand III and it was completed in 1493. Construction of the Portal of Forgiveness began under the direction of Alvar Matinez in 1418. In the main scene the Virgin is giving a chasuble to Saint Ildephonsus, a common theme in the cathedral's decoration. Toledo is one of Spain's most historic cities and was the capital of Visigoth Spain until the Moors conquered the region in the 8th century. Toledo Historic City was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986.
