Description
The caporales is a popular dance in Bolivia, and is especially associated with the Gran Poder festival in La Paz which was added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. The dance is thought to have started among African slaves brought to the country during the colonial period, though there are several other theories. The rey caporal characters and masks are parodies of the Spanish colonial rulers and slave owners, note the whip in his hand on the far right of the image.
