Description
These unique coloured or polychromatic burial towers or chulpas (chullpas) are located in the Lauca river valley in the far west of Bolivia. They are thought to have been built between 1200-1300AD by the Carangas culture for dead chiefs and rulers of the various tribes that inhabited the region at that time. Some have been restored with assistance from the World Monuments Fund. The volcano in the background is Puquintica (5712m / 18,740ft) on the Chile border.
