Description
The Hastings miniature railway (on the south coast of England) was opened in 1948 and runs along the sea front to Rock-a-Nore close to the old town where the fishing port is. Hastings is home to one of Britain's oldest fishing fleets and the largest beach (as opposed to harbour) based fishing fleet in Europe. The tall black timber buildings in the background are net shops, unique to Hastings and dating from the early 19th century. They were built to store nets and gear rather than to dry nets (they have several floors inside); the tall thin design is because at the time they were built there was very limited space on the shingle beach for buildings.
