Description
A rustic round house (part of a small group of houses) in Sajama National Park in the Bolivian altiplano after a winter snowfall. In the past the native peoples of the Andes lived in small family groups or clans called ayllus, a system that still continues in many places today. With improved infrastructure and every increasing migration to the cities a lot of these small communities have been abandoned, become occupied on a temporary basis or only by elderly family members who look after the livestock (very important in the Sajama region as agriculture is very difficult). These snowfalls, caused by cold fronts coming up from the south, transform the altiplano steppes into a harsh yet strangely beautiful landscapes. Heavy falls can cut remote areas off for days or more and be a real hardship for the local people and their livestock, which struggle to find grazing under the snow. The mountains emerging from the clouds in the distance are on the border with Chile.
