Description
A view of Guallatiri volcano (6071m /19,918ft), one of the most active volcanos in northern Chile. It's last confirmed eruption was in 1960, it seems likely it also erupted in 1985 and there was a notable increase in fumarole activity in 2015 which coincided with a magnitude 6.4 earthquake nearby (the epicentre was approx 7km from the summit). Cairns (either a simple pile of stones or more elaborate ones like this one) are common on mountain passes and hilltops with views of major mountains in the Andes. Many peaks were and are considered sacred and dwelling places of the apus or mountain deities; sites such as this are commonly used for rituals and offerings. This area is part of the Las Vicunas National Reserve and also the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
