Description
A view looking north across the Salar de Maricunga, the southernmost salt flat in Chile, from the summit of the nearby Pastillitos volcano. The Salar is in the Puna de Atacama, a vast high altitude volcanic desert plateau in the central Andes shared by Chile and Argentina. Most of it is also in the Nevado de Tres Cruces National Park. The turquoise lake nearest the viewer is Laguna Santa Rosa, one of several saline lakes around the western edge of the Salar. In the middle right hand part of the image the Salar has been covered by windblown sand, gravel and other debris from the surrounding volcanos.
