Description
The statue of the Santa Librada inside the Santa Librada church in Las Tablas on the Azuero Peninsula in Panama. It is one of several notable old colonial churches in the Peninsula and was built in 1789, though much of the current building is more modern (the church was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1802 and a fire in 1958). The region (which is in the central southern part of Panama) is famous for its extravagant Carnival celebrations and other festivals. The Las Tablas Carnival is one of the largest; the festival for the Santa Librada takes place in mid July and the famous Pollera festival takes place at the same time.
