Artist's Description

The Lady Maryland sailing schooner passes the Seven-Foot Knoll Lighthouse as she leaves Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Built in 1986, she is only pungy schooner currently in existence. Pungy schooners orignally developed from the Chesapeake pilot schooners of the 1700s and were designed to carry perishable cargos through the Chesapeake Bay and further afield. The first ones were built in the mid-1800s and regularly sailed the Bay until the early 1900s; by the 1950s there were none in existance. The Seven-Foot Knoll Lighthouse is the oldest screwpile lighthouse in Maryland and entered service (at a different location to its current one) in 1856.
