Description
The Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is found in the oceans of South America and breeds in large colonies on the coasts of Argentina, Chile (especially in Patagonian regions in the far south) and the Falkland Islands. It is named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who recorded the birds in 1520 during the voyage when he became the first person to circumnavigate the Earth. This bird is moulting into adult plumage, hence the disheveled and somewhat amusing appearance!
