Description
Porto's Se do Porto cathedral is one of the city's most important historic buildings and sits on a hilltop in the heart of the Old Town. It was originally built in the 12th and 13th centuries in the Romanesque style, and has since been enlarged and modified several times. Its grand entrance portal was completely remodelled by the Italian architect Niccoló Nasoni in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The wonderful stone carved column in the foreground, the Pelourinho ("Pillory") do Porto dates from the same period. It symbolizes justice and, according to legend, was once used to hang the city’s criminals.... The plaza and terraces around the cathedral are great places to relax and have superb views over the city.
