Description
The Archangel Michael seems surprised to find a spectactor blocking his way while he leads a group of devils during the Diablada dance at Bolivia's Oruro Carnival! Oruro's Carnival is one of the most famous festivals in South America. It was originally declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001 and added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008. The Diablada, symbolising the struggle between good and evil, is the most famous dance associated with the festival.
The event is well worth a visit if you get the opportunity. The main parades feature thousands of dancers in varying and colourful costumes and plenty of noise from the accompanying bands; sights and sounds you are unlikely to forget in a hurry!
