Description
A beautiful shooting star apears to emerge from the Milky Way's Galactic Centre above Incahuasi Island in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni in south west Bolivia. The glow below it and above the horizon in the centre of the image is the Zodiacal Light, which is produced by sunlight reflecting off dust particles in the Solar System. It is visible along the ecliptic during the spring and autumn months before dawn or after sunset (which depends whether you are in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere).
The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles. The large forked cactus is an Echinopsis atacamensis (pasacana subspecies). They grow in Bolivia and northern Argentina and are common in the region. In the cold dry climate they only grow at approx 1cm a year, the tallest are well over 10m high......
