Description
This fascinating little cemetery along with the mine workings is at Milluni, a Bolivian village in the Cordillera Real range near La Paz that used to be an important tin mining centre. The mine was abandoned in the 1990s after world tin prices crashed dramatically during the 1980s. With a rise in mineral prices in recent years it has been partly reopened by a local mining cooperative. Among the tombs are monuments dedicated to events of May 1965, when many miners were killed in clashes with the army during a general strike and nationwide protests against the military dictatorship that ruled Bolivia at the time.
