Description
Part of the fascinating and historic cemetery at Milluni near La Paz, Bolivia, taken after a snowfall caused by a cold front and meaning snow settles at a lower altitude than usual. Milluni used to be an important tin mining centre in the Cordillera Real range. The mine was abandoned in the 1990s after world tin prices crashed dramatically during the 1980s. With a rise in mineral prices in recent years it has been partly reopened by a local mining cooperative. Among the tombs are monuments dedicated to events of May 1965, when many miners were killed in clashes with the army during a general strike and nationwide protests against the military dictatorship that ruled Bolivia at the time. The mountain providing a spectacular backdrop is Huayna Potosi (6088m / 19,975ft), a popular peak with climbers.
