Description
A view of the St. Vincent de Paul church, the oldest Catholic parish church in continuous use in Baltimore. The church was founded in 1840 by Irish workers who were building the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. It was built in a neoclassical style.
The Stars and Stripes are the version of the American flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes (introduced in 1795 when Vermont and Kentucky joined the Union) and commonly called the Star Spangled Banner. This is the flag that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem "Defense of Fort McHenry" which was adapted to become the national anthem of the United States of America. The other flag is a Heritage Walk flag.
