Description
The Star Spangled Banner flag flies above a group of students visiting Federal Hill in Baltimore. This version of the American flag was introduced in 1795 when Vermont and Kentucky joined the Union. It has 15 stars and 15 stripes, the only version of the flag to do so (in 1818 a law was passed fixing the number of stripes at 13 and that only new stars would be added each time a new state joined the Union). This is also the flag that that flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812, and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem "Defense of Fort McHenry" which was adapted to become the national anthem of the United States of America.
