Description
Camping under starry skies as the pre dawn twilight starts to light up the Payachatas ("twin" in the Aymara language) volcanos, which dominate the vast high altitude plains of the spectacular Lauca National Park in the far north of Chile. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. The peaks lie on the Bolivia border and are individually Parinacota (L, 6342m / 20,805ft) and Pomerape (R, 6282 m / 20,610ft). The light below the left hand side of the Parinacota volcano is the site of the old border crossing at Chungara. This image was taken from base camp of the nearby Guallatiri volcano.
