Description
Tiahuanaco (often written Tiwanaku) is Bolivia's most important archaeological site and one of the most significant in South America. The site appears to have been an important pilgrimage centre as far back as 500BC and populated well before that. The civilisation was most powerful from approx 400-1000AD when the Tiahuanaco empire covered much of what is now central and southern Peru, western Bolivia and northern Chile. These stone heads are located in what is now called the Semi-Subterranean Temple, one of several important structures in the site.
