Description
The surfbird (Calidris virgata) is a large sandpiper in some ways similar to turnstones. They breed in the mountain tundra of Alaska and Yukon. Outside the breeding season they migrate to the Pacific coasts, where they can be found from southern Alaska to as far south as Tierra del Fuego in the far south of South America, an impressive journey! Non breeding birds sometimes stay in South America all year round. This shot was taken in northern Chile.
