Description
Taboga Island lies in the Gulf of Panama in the Pacific Ocean about 20km or a hour's boat ride from Panama City. The conquistador Vasco Nunez de Balboa was the first European to visit the island; its strategic position and harbour made it an important base for further Spanish exploration south along the Pacific coast (leading to Francisco Pizarro's conquest of the Inca Empire in what is now Peru) and later by other seafarers and pirates. Nowadays the island (which is also known as Isla de los Flores / Island of Flowers) is a popular beach trip at weekends; part of it is also a nature reserve. The small islet in the background is Isla El Morro.
