Description
Men wearing their traditional dress stand outside the church on Taquile Island, which is in the Peruvian part of Lake Titicaca and usually visited from Puno. Its inhabitants speak Quechua and still strongly preserve their traditional way of life and dress. The island is famous for its weavings, the women are expert weavers and the men are just as good at knitting, they would have made the woolen hats they are wearing in this shot. Taquile and its textile art traditions were originally declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005 and added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.
