Description
A group of tarqueada musicians at a festival in Orinoca, Oruro Department, Bolivia. The tarqueada is one of many traditional dances of the Bolivian altiplano and is especially associated with the Oruro region. The wooden flutes are called tarkas and look a bit like recorders, they are played in a similar way. There are many different types and sizes, some are wonderfully carved and decorated. They have ancient origins, similar instruments made of bone as well as wood have been found in burials and archaeological sites.
