Description
Mt Fitzroy (3405m / 11,170ft) is called "El Chalten" or "Mountain of Fire" in the local indigenous Tehuelche language, which is exactly the effect the rising sun causes as it catches the awesome granite rock walls on a clear morning. A spectacular sight and well worth the pre dawn hike up to a suitable viewpoint......! The peak is one of the highlights of the Los Glaciares National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
The peak to the left is Aguja (or "Needle") Poincenot, named after the the French climber Jacques Poincenot who died during the expedition which made the first ascent of the peak in 1952. The Fitz Roy name is in honour of Robert FitzRoy, the English naval office who was captain of the HMS Beagle on its famous 2nd voyage.
