Description
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs alongside the Potomac River from Washington DC to Cumberland in Maryland. The first sections opened in 1830 and the Canal operated until 1924. The original plans were for the Canal to cross the Allegheny Mountains to the Ohio River but this section was never built due to financial problems and competition from the railroads (which reached Cumberland 8 years before the Canal eventually did). The Town Creek Aqueduct is one of 11 on the Canal, it was completed in 1850.

Terrific capture and composition! This reminds me of the bridge at Antietam Creek (Sharpsburg, MD).
James Brunker replied:
Thank you Lesley! Built around the same time I imagine? Always fancied visiting Antietam, unfortunately no longer have family in Maryland....
