Description
A black and white image of the Tunupa volcano (5320m / 17,460ft), which lies on the northern shore of the Salar de Uyuni salt flat in southwest Bolivia. Tunupa (sometimes written Thunupa) gets its name from an important Andean deity often associated with storm and lightning and has long been a sacred peak for people of the region. It features in legends about the origins of the Salar (which locals often call the Salar de Tunupa rather than the Salar de Uyuni). This view was taken from the south not far from the village of Coquesa. The lines on the hillside below the volcano are stone walls; villagers keep plenty of llamas and alpacas and quinoa is an important crop in the region.
