Description
The magnificent 16th century Casa de la Misericordia ("House of Mercy") is one of the most notable historic buildings in Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal. It is also known as the Casa das Varandas (House of Balconies) and overlooks the main square; it is attached to a church and monastery built by the same Misericordia brotherhood. The city was an important port in mediaeval times, when it was the departure point for many Portuguese explorers.
