Description
An adult and young vicuna on the shore of Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni in the rainy season. The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles at an altitude of 3656m / 12,000ft. It often floods (to a depth of only a few cm) during the rainy season which turns the surface into a huge mirror reflecting the skies.
Vicunas (Vicugna vicugna) are the smallest and rarest of South America's wild camelids and found in the barren high altitude plains and steppes of the Andes from central Peru to northern Argentina.
