Description
Houses sprawl up hillsides and valleys in the suburbs of Bolivia's administrative capital La Paz, with peaks of the Cordillera Real range in the background. A recent winter snowfall still lies on the plains of the high altiplano. The main peaks are Mt Huayna Potosi (L, 6088m / 19,975ft) and Chacaltaya (R, 5395m / 17,700ft). Few cities are located in such challenging geographical terrain as La Paz. The centre is at an altitude around 3650m / 11,975 ft in a huge valley below the Andes mountains; there is an altitude difference of nearly 1000m / 3,300ft between the upper and lower parts of the city! The cross on the hill left of centre is the Jach'a Kollo ("Big Hill" in the Aymara language) viewpoint in the Tacagua district, one of many in the upper parts of the city.
