Description
In the late 19th century Iquique in northern Chile was one of the most important ports in South America, thanks to the nitrate mining boom in the Atacama Desert. It is still a major port, a holiday resort and capital of Region I de Tarapaca. It enjoys a dramatic setting beneath towering desert cliffs and giant sand dunes. The dune in the foreground is known as Cerro Dragon / Dragon Hill and rises 220m / 720ft above its base, the summit is 320m / 1,050ft above sea level. It is a large seif or longitudinal dune thought to be around 20,000 years old.
