Description
View looking along Washington Place to the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon, Baltimore. The Washington Monument was the first architectural monument planned to honor George Washington. It is 178 feet / 54m high and was completed in 1829. The statue in front of it is of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War and also the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. He was also a close friend of George Washington and helped write the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen with Thomas Jefferson. The church in the background is the gothic style United Methodist Church, designed by Baltimore architect Thomas Dixon and completed in 1872.
