Description
Llamas are common across the Andes and often graze in large herds near main roads. A fully grown llama can stand almost 2m / 6ft high and weigh 150-200kg / 300-450lb, enough to do serious damage to a vehicle. This image was taken in Lauca National Park in Chile, which is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. The peaks in the background are the Payachatas ("twin" in the Aymara language) volcanos - Parinacota (centre, 6342m / 20,805ft) and Pomerape (L, 6282m / 20,610ft), which lie on the Bolivian border. This road is the Ruta 11, the main highway from landlocked Bolivia to the port of Arica on the Chilean coast and an important trade route.
