Description
If there is sufficient spring rainfall the southern part of Chile's Atacama Desert (the world's driest) and coastal dunes can burst into flower. This phenomenon is known locally as El Desierto Florido (The Flowering Desert) and occurs roughly twice a decade. Many of the species that flower are endemic to the region, this one is known locally as Rosita (Cruckshanksia verticillata). This image was taken in the Llanos de Challe National Park in Region III de Atacama which was created to protect the unique flora of the area; in the background is the white sand Playa Blanca beach.
