Description
Sajama volcano (6542m / 21,465ft) in western Bolivia is the country's highest peak and rises dramatically above the barren altiplano desert landscape. The green plant in the right foreground is Yareta or Llareta (Azorella compacta), which is endangered and only found in the high altitude deserts of the Andes. Due to the cold dry climate it is very slow growing (up to 1cm / year), it is also used by local people for fuel.
