Description
The ornate Saint Ildefonso church on Praca da Batalha / Batalha Square in Porto, Portugal. The church was built of granite in a proto-Baroque style and completed in 1739. The facade is covered by approx 11,000 azulejo tiles which were added in November 1932. They were created by the artist Jorge Colaco and show scenes from the life of Saint Ildefonso (Ildephonsus of Toledo, a Visigoth who bishop of Toledo, Spain in the 7th century) and Gospel scenes. The square is supposedly named after a 10th-century battle (batalha in Portuguese) fought between Moorish forces and the inhabitants of Porto, which resulted in the the destruction of the city.
