Artist's Description
The Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) is one of the most unique and spectacular birds found in South America. It is a member of the cotinga family and found in the cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes from Venezuela south to Bolivia. It is Peru's national bird and also features on the badges of villages, national parks etc of areas where it is found. In Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia it is commonly known by its Quechua name tunki or tunqui. There are 4 subspecies, this one is Rupicola peruvianus saturatus which is found in southeastern Peru and Bolivia. Good places to see them are the forests near Machu Picchu or en route to Manu National Park in Peru, or the Yungas region of Bolivia (where this shot was taken). In the breeding season the birds gather in impressive leks where males perform and fight to impress the females. Adults are approx 13in / 32cm long; this shot shows a male, the females are less brightly colored.
