Very cool James! It must be so interesting to visit there!

James Brunker replied:

Thank you LInda, it's a fascinating and peaceful place, the monks certainly knew how to pick a location back in the day! For some reason it's not as well known as several other ruined abbeys in the UK

Artist's Description

Part of the ruins of Bayham Abbey, on the border of Kent and East Sussex between Tunbridge Wells and Lamberhurst in southeast England. The abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Premonstratensian monks and suppressed by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525 to fund two new colleges he planned to build. Most of the abbey was built using the distinctive local yellow Wealden sandstone, as are many churches and historic buildings in the area. The mansion was built in the 19th century as part of improvements and landscaping done on the estate by the Earls of Camden (who owned the estate that included the ruins from the start of the 18th century until 1961).
