Description
A fishermen checks and dries his nets on a quay in the Marina Atlantica docks in Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal. Behind them is the Gil Eannes, a former Portuguese hospital ship built in Viana and launched in 1953. The Gil Eannes was the flagship of the Portuguese White Fleet that operated in the seas off Newfoundland and Greenland fishing for cod until 1973. As well as hospital ship she also served as a mail ship, tug, icebreaker and general support ship. After 25 years of inactivity she was saved from the scrapyard and is now a museum ship and youth hostel. Viana do Castelo was an important port in mediaeval times, when it was the departure point for many Portuguese explorers.
