Artist's Description

Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal was an important port in mediaeval times, when it was the departure point for many Portuguese explorers. Many wonderful historic buildings date from this period, including the 16th century Casa de Carreira mansion in this image, initially built for the Tavora Abreu family, the Counts of Carreira. It is a fine example of the Manueline architecture popular at the time in the region. In background is the Santa Luzia basilica on a hilltop overlooking the city.
